Peppermint Hot Chocolate & Mocha Spoons {homemade holiday gift}

One of the best holiday treats is a peppermint mocha. Or peppermint hot chocolate, depending who you talk to. I love when the red holiday cups come out at a certain coffee shop, and I will admit to having already indulged in a peppermint mocha during a hot chocolate date with the girls. But they are very easy and much more natural when made at home.
The best part is that you can give this special treat as a gift. Wrapped in a plastic treat bag, tied with twine and a label, peppermint hot chocolate spoons make a sweet homemade gift for teachers, coworkers, and friends. I used Sucre Shop's darling wooden spoons

 After chocolate is melted in a double boiler, peppermint extract is stirred in, and the mixture is poured into a small ice cube tray, chocolate mold, or... an ice pop mold? Hey, I had to get resourceful. Sprinkle with crushed candy cane pieces and pop in the fridge to harden.
Give some away, and keep some for yourself to enjoy with fresh whipped cream after the kids go to bed.

Happy holidays my Yummies!

Peppermint Chocolate Spoons
print this recipe!

makes 15

2 cups semisweet (dark or milk are fine too!) chocolate chunks or chips
1 teaspoon peppermint flavor *I recommend Simple Organic Peppermint Flavor available at Whole
      Foods
1 candy cane, crushed

15 plastic or wooden spoons
15 plastic treat bags (I used Wilton brand from Michael's)
baking twine or ribbon

Place a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of 1 inch of simmering water. Place the chocolate pieces in the bowl and stir until melted. Remove from heat and stir until smooth. Stir in peppermint flavor. Carefully pour melted chocolate into a small ice cube tray or any other small round or square mold. I used a small ice pop mold and a ceramic egg crate for my molds - you can get creative! Sprinkle melted chocolate with crushed candy cane pieces. Insert spoons. My spoons stood up without falling over. If yours do seem to fall over, wait until your chocolate has stiffened up a little. Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until completely hardened. To remove chocolate spoons from the molds, fill a shallow dish or frying pan with hot water. Dip the bottom of the mold in the hot water and the chocolate should release more easily. Place molded chocolate on wax paper. Place back in the refrigerator for a few minutes if chocolate is at all melty - you don't want chocolate on your bag. Place chocolate spoons in the treat bags and tie with twine or ribbon. If using labels, poke a hole in the top of labels and tie onto the twine.
